"May I take this away? Or would you like a box for that?"
I need a break from "real life," as it's sometimes termed.
Purchased: tickets for self and Number One Son to the midnight showing of Harry Pottah & The Deathly Hallows in 3-D With Actual Surround-Hex Magical Aura and Atmosphere.
Discontent: The listings say that this is to occur on "Thursday Evening at 12:01 A.M." No, no. That's Friday morning. It's Friday at 12:01, n'est pas?
We went through this with the last Harry Potter film. I was a day early.
Now then.
When my daughter and I many years ago stood in line (we were something like 13th in a line that stretched around the block, if I remember rightly) to get our copy of The Half-Blood Prince, a riot nearly broke out when some guy dressed as Darth Vader walked into the bookstore at nine o'clock at night (books went on sale at, yes, 12:01 A.M.). He was carrying a sign that said, "The REAL Dark Lord!" A tense moment: I could see the headlines: "Six Killed In Nerd-Brawl."
Not that we're nerds. My daughter was a dead ringer for Hermione Granger, it is true, and skunked all comers at Potter Trivia in the bookstore that night. And yes, I was in fact wearing a cloak and carrying a wand. What's your point.
And yes, we know how to make butterbeer for a pre-movie sorcerous mood.
INGREDIENTS:
Butter
Butterscotch Ice-cream Topping
Club Soda
Have a Hungarian Horntail heat a half-cup of butterscotch syrup in a steel cauldron with a half-tablespoon of butter until the syrup is just bubbly. (If a dragon is not available, use a microwave on high for a minute and thirty seconds, ya Squib.) Mix the butter and syrup together, stirring for 30 seconds or so while it cools.
Add a cup of club soda.
Serve in coffee mugs.

your favorite daughter really enjoyed this.
We've been pretty HP crazy in our family, too. We even homeschooled as if all the lessons were correspondence courses from Hogwarts. We held several big theme parties, including a pre-party before removing en masse to Barnes & Noble for their Book 7 party. My then 11yo won the trivia contest--all by herself, I might add, despite the roving bands of college students working as groups. So my congrats to your daughter. We had a recipe for butterbeer that included butterscotch schnapps and cream soda that was delish (but just as intoxicating as butterbeer is in the books!). I was going to include it here but it seems to have slipped away from my Hogwarts computer files.
I know several people who will enjoy this recipe -- thanks!
Sandra, butterscotch Schnapps sounds awesome.... why didn't I think of that?
We did try to make it with creme soda, but it was so sweet it was cloying to all except Super Cool Otter-Daughter Girl-Squirrel, aged 14.
