American English in Google Labs

Otter Hitler had his Churchill. Abercrombie had his Fitch. Daffy had his Bugs Bunny. "Toward" has its "Towards."
EditorMark at Twitter has rigged a Google Labs Ngram viewer that tracks the use of "Toward" and "Towards" in written American English from 1800. And it looks like "Towards," having jumped the shark in 1840, is going out of style like the neck-beard.

Compare British English:

Stop the madness.
